Who Needs a Dubai Transit Visa?

You need a transit visa if you want to leave the airport during a layover in the UAE and you are not a GCC citizen and not eligible for visa-free entry or a visa on arrival. If you are simply changing planes and staying airside in the transit area, you do not need a visa at all.

You probably need a transit visa if:

• Your nationality is not on the UAE visa-free or visa-on-arrival lists.
• You hold a passport such as those of many South Asian, African or Middle Eastern countries without a qualifying residence permit.

• You are staying in the airside transit area and not clearing immigration.

The 14-day and 60-day entry visa route

In June 2026 the ICP widened an existing entry visa for certain nationalities. It now applies to citizens of India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa who hold a valid residence permit from the United States, a European Union member state, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada. Indian passport holders: what to know

Indian citizens make up a large share of transit visa searches. An Indian passport holder generally needs a transit visa to leave the airport, unless they hold a qualifying residence permit or visa from one of the countries listed above, in which case the 14-day or 60-day entry visa may apply. Applicants without one of those documents should apply for the 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa in advance.

GDRFA lists the core requirements, and the same set is requested by airlines and agents:

• Passport or travel document with a copy of the full bio page, valid for at least six months.
• Recent colour passport-sized photograph on a white background.
• Confirmed onward flight ticket to a third country, not the country you flew in from.
• Proof of accommodation: a valid UAE hotel booking, or the address of friends or family you will stay with.

How to Apply for a Dubai Transit Visa (Step by Step)

You cannot buy a transit visa at the airport. It must be arranged online before you travel, through one of two routes.

Route 1: Through a UAE-based airline

1. Book your flight on a UAE-based airline such as Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai or Air Arabia.
2. During booking, select the optional facility to Apply for transit visa.
3. Choose 48 hours or 96 hours and pay the fee.
4. The visa is issued electronically and emailed to you.

Important: airline sponsorship The transit visa must be sponsored by the same airline that carries you to the UAE. A visa issued through an unrelated carrier is not accepted by the authorities.

Route 2: Through the GDRFA portal or an authorised agent

1. Have your flight tickets booked, showing the onward journey out of Dubai.
2. On gdrfad.gov.ae, go to Services, then Entry and Exit, then Issuing Visa via Airport, and choose Issuance of a 48/96-hour Transit Visa.
3. Complete the form and upload your passport copy, photo, flight ticket and hotel booking.
4. Pay the fee and wait for approval. The visa is emailed once approved.

Overstay Rules and Fines

The transit visa is strictly non-extendable. If you stay beyond your permitted period, an overstay fine of AED 50 per day applies. Fines must be cleared before you leave the country, and unpaid penalties can lead to problems with future UAE visa applications.

What if my onward flight is delayed or cancelled?

Regional tensions and airspace restrictions have caused rolling delays and some cancellations at Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports during September 2026, although airports remain operational and most carriers are flying near full capacity. If your onward flight is disrupted, act early:

• Contact your airline immediately, before your visa period ends. If the airline causes the delay, it typically rebooks you and manages the visa implications.
