The last week of a trip has a way of slipping. A delayed meeting, a family occasion or an extra few days on the coast can leave you holding a visa that ends before your plans do. The good news is that you have more than one way to stay longer, and the earlier you act, the cheaper and simpler each option is.
This guide from Hadaf Al Muteena Travel and Tourism LLC, a private travel agency in Deira, Dubai, explains how UAE tourist visa extensions work, who is eligible and what to do if an extension is not possible.
Three Ways to Stay Longer in the UAE
| Option | How it works | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Extend the current visa | Add days to an eligible tourist visa from inside the UAE, usually in 30 day blocks | You need a few more weeks and the visa is still valid |
| Exit and apply for a new visa | Leave before the visa ends and apply for a fresh single or multiple entry visa | The visa cannot be extended or you have used your extensions |
| Choose a longer visa from the start | Book a 60 day stay at the outset | You already know the trip will run long |
How a Tourist Visa Extension Works
An extension adds days to your existing entry permit. It is not a new visa, and it must be requested before the current permit expires. Most emirates handle extensions through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), while visas issued in Dubai go through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA).
Extensions are generally available in 30 day blocks. How many you can take, and the total stay allowed, depends on your visa type and the issuing emirate, so confirm the rules for your own visa before you rely on them.
Is Your Visa Eligible?
- Your tourist visa is still valid and has not expired
- You are inside the UAE
- You have not reached the total stay limit for your visa type
Some entries cannot be extended. Transit visas cannot be extended, renewed or upgraded, and certain visa on arrival entries are not eligible. Our UAE transit visa guide explains the transit rules.
What You Will Need
- Clear colour copy of your passport photo page
- A copy of your current visa or its permit number
- Your date of entry into the UAE
- Contact details for updates
The authorities can ask for more in some cases, so gather everything before you start.
Deadline and Overstay Fines
Act before the expiry date. Overstaying brings a daily fine, currently listed at AED 50 per day, and administrative charges can apply. Rates and grace rules change, so confirm the current figure with the authorities before you rely on it.
The fine builds up every day, so a late request always costs more than an early one.
If Your Visa Cannot Be Extended
- Check the exit date on your e-visa and leave before it passes.
- Choose a new visa that fits your next stay: a single entry tourist visa for one more visit, or a multiple entry tourist visa if you plan to come and go.
- Apply through our apply now page before you travel.

No. Transit visas cannot be extended, renewed or converted.
Who approves an extension?
ICP approves extensions for most emirates, and GDRFA approves them for visas issued in Dubai.
